Continuous Tenses

The Past Continuous tense is used to describe actions that were happening at a specific moment in the past. Often used to show an ongoing action that was interrupted by another action.

Active Voice

Formula Example
Affirmative Subject+was/were+V1-ing I was playing with my dog.
Negative Subject+was/were not+V1-ing I was not playing with my dog.
Question was/were+Subject+V1-ing? Was I playing with my dog?

Passive Voice

Formula Example
Affirmative Object+was/were+being+V3 The game was being played by the team.
Negative Object+was/were not+being+V3 The game was not being played.
Question was/were+Object+being+V3? Was the game being played?
Grammar Focus
  • Was/Were — "was" with singular (he, she, it); were with plural (we, they) and "you"
  • Being — used before V3 in passive to show the action was ongoing

The Present Continuous tense is used to describe actions happening right now or around the current moment.

Active Voice

Formula Example
Affirmative Subject+am/is/are+V1-ing I am playing with my dog right now.
Negative Subject+am/is/are not+V1-ing I am not playing with my dog right now.
Question am/is/are+Subject+V1-ing? Am I playing with my dog?

Passive Voice

Formula Example
Affirmative Object+is/am/are+being+V3 The game is being played by the team right now.
Negative Object+is/am/are not+being+V3 The game is not being played right now.
Question is/am/are+Object+being+V3? Is the game being played right now?

  • Am/Is/Are — "am" with I; "is" with he/she/it; "are" with we/you/they
  • Being — shows the action is currently ongoing in passive voice

The Future Continuous tense is used to describe actions that will be happening at a specific moment in the future.

Active Voice

Affirmative Subject+will+be+V1-ing I will be playing with my dog at 6 PM tomorrow.
Negative Subject+will not (won't)+be+V1-ing I will not be playing with my dog at 6 PM tomorrow.
Question will+Subject+be+V1-ing? Will I be playing with my dog at 6 PM tomorrow?

Passive Voice

Affirmative Object+will+be+being+V3 The game will be being played by the team at 6 PM tomorrow.
Negative Object+will not (won't)+be+being+V3 The game will not be being played at 6 PM tomorrow.
Question will+Object+be+being+V3? Will the game be being played at 6 PM tomorrow?
