Perfect Continuous Tenses

The Past Perfect Continuous tense is used to describe actions that were ongoing in the past for a period of time before another event happened.

Active Voice

Formula Example
Affirmative Subject+had been+V1-ing I had been playing with my dog for an hour when it started raining.
Negative Subject+had not been+V1-ing I had not been playing with my dog for an hour.
Question had+Subject+been+V1-ing? Had I been playing with my dog for an hour?

Passive Voice

Formula Example
Affirmative Object+had been being+V3 The game had been being played by the team for an hour.
Negative Object+had not been being+V3 The game had not been being played for an hour.
Question had+Object+been being+V3? Had the game been being played for an hour?
Grammar Focus
  • Had been — indicates the action was ongoing in the past before another event
  • Being — used before V3 in passive to show the action was ongoing before another past event

The Present Perfect Continuous tense is used to describe actions that started in the past and are still continuing now, or have recently stopped but have a connection to the present.

Active Voice

Affirmative Subject+have/has+been+V1-ing I have been playing with my dog for an hour.
Negative Subject+have/has not+been+V1-ing I have not been playing with my dog for an hour.
Question have/has+Subject+been+V1-ing? Have I been playing with my dog for an hour?

Passive Voice

Affirmative Object+have/has+been+being+V3 The game has been being played by the team for an hour.
Negative Object+have/has not+been+being+V3 The game has not been being played for an hour.
Question have/has+Object+been+being+V3? Has the game been being played for an hour?

  • Being — shows the action has been ongoing and continues to the present in passive voice

The Future Perfect Continuous tense is used to describe actions that will have been happening for a period of time before a specific point in the future.

Active Voice

Affirmative Subject+will+have+been+V1-ing I will have been playing with my dog for two hours by the time you arrive.
Negative Subject+will not (won't)+have+been+V1-ing I will not have been playing with my dog for two hours by the time you arrive.
Question will+Subject+have+been+V1-ing? Will I have been playing with my dog for two hours by the time you arrive?

Passive Voice
